Hi and welcome to our site! My name is Brittany Deshotel & along with my parents, Lisa & Ricky, we are the proud owners of Backyard Bunnies Rabbitry. We are a small farm located just outside of Ville Platte, Louisiana - between Alexandria and Lafayette. My dad got me started in rabbits. He used to raise rabbits on & off for years. I remember how much I loved playing with all the bunnies when I was a kid. He even showed his Checkered Giants a couple of times & won 2 trophies. In October of 2008 my dad decided he wanted to get back into rabbits so we went out & bought our first pairs of Mini Rex & Holland Lops. I didn't know too much about rabbits at the time. They were non-pedigreed & we were only planning on raising a few in the back yard for fun... boy did that change! We went from 4 rabbits to 20+ in a short amount of time. Rabbits are like potato chips, you can't have just one!! lol We learned that most people wanted pedigreed show rabbits, so we sold our pairs & bought all pedigreed show stock. I wasn't really that interested in showing my rabbits. It wasn't about winning or competition for us, we simply enjoyed raising nice, quality bunnies. I am proud to say that I was lucky enough to raise some of the rarest colored Holland Lops there is. I have had Blue-Eyed Whites, Pointed Whites, Siamese Sables, Sable Points, Smoke Pearls, Seals, Black Otters, Chocolates, Oranges, Chestnuts, Opals, Blues, & of course the most common colors, torts & blacks. I remember when I got my first Siamese Sable Holland Lop (Jujube), he was born out of a Black Tort & a Black (never would have expected this at the time!). I was so excited & I just knew I had to keep him! Some of the does that I kept even produced a very rare color that no one in Louisiana had (Pointed White) by breeding them back to their dad. My colors all started with SheBang & Kamikaze. We also had several colors in Mini Rex, but we fell in love with the Blues & Reds. We raised Mini Rex & Holland Lops for a little over 5 years, but in December of 2012 we decided to get out of the rabbit hobby/business. We unfortunately no longer had the time to properly care for them & enjoy them like we used to due to working long hours. It was a very hard decision & it made me very sad, but I knew it was time to let them go. Over the years, we have learned a lot. We did this as a family & can say that we truly loved the hobby. I may even get back into rabbits *someday*, you never know, but for now it's time for me to move on.
I was going to delete our website for obvious reasons, but I decided to keep it up because I worked really hard on it & I want to be able to remember them. I created several "articles" on rabbit care, about blue-eyed white rabbits, holland lop color genetics, & much more. Even though we are no longer raising rabbits, it would be nice to know that my articles are still here to help others learn more about these adorable little animals.
Besides rabbits we also raise Boer goats,, and pigeons!
